David Bryan, Pastor

David (M.A. History; B.A. Music) was ordained as a minister in 2004 and has led TNC for the past sixteen years. He is an avid reader of history and science, a big sports fan, married to an amazing woman and best friend, and father to two awesome children.

THE NEW COMMUNITY CHURCH

TNC is an interdenominational congregation, following Jesus’ example as we grow in love and service to one another, our community and our world. We are home to a melting pot of ethnicities, economic situations, faith traditions, political leanings and socio-cultural differences.

OUR VALUES

+ EXPERIENCING THE DIVINE HERE & NOW

We believe God’s kingdom is available now, and therefore we are not only waiting for heaven someday. We can experience a slice of heaven today because the Divine is here, now, all around us. We are mindful of this in everything we do.

+ LEADING WITH LOVE

If we don’t have love, we have nothing. Love is at the center of all we do at TNC -- our love for God, our love for each other, our love for humankind, our love for all of creation. In everything we do, we lead with love.

+ HAVING A GROWTH MINDSET

We are devoted to learning and growing. Part of that is immersing ourselves in the Bible. Another part is engaging in works of scholarship, in the context of scripture and history, to expand our understanding of how the world works. This is not just a theological practice but a way to continually grow in our lives, as we “train ourselves unto Godliness.”

+ PRACTICING HUMILITY & OPENNESS

We intentionally approach every situation with humility and a deep sense that other people have important wisdom and intrinsic worth. As such, we welcome kind and honest feedback. Further, we recognize that we do not already have “all the answers” about the Divine. Therefore doubts and questions about faith are a normal part of spiritual growth. God is big and we are still learning.

+ STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE

In everything we do, we strive for excellence. This means always doing our best and helping others to do the same. Little things are big things. Every activity is an opportunity to bring our best selves, and we do that through prayer, thoughtfulness, teamwork and openness to feedback.

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

+ Devotion to Scripture

At TNC, we’re devoted to immersing ourselves in the Bible. Rather than traditions or denominational prophets, the Bible is our unique and authoritative guide for understanding who God is and how to orient our lives fully around him. We regularly and intentionally engage in weekday readings of scripture and read scripture aloud as a normal part of our worship experience.

+ Faith with Science

We believe that science is faith’s best friend and a window into seeing and learning about God. We embrace scientific discoveries about our universe and view this as another way to learn more about the Divine. Science does not contradict the Bible, and the Bible does not contradict Science!

+ Depth of Teaching

The New Community offers a special depth and quality of teaching, and we pride ourselves on deep, thought-provoking and challenging discourse. Every teaching is well-researched and robust, supplemented with scholarship from top thinkers and academic writers. We are continually learning together.

+ Bias toward Action

While everything starts with the Scriptures, we believe action is what truly demonstrates our faith. We are a church that’s more about what you do Monday morning, than what you think on Sunday! Part of this reality means that four or so times a year we replace our regular services with other church-wide or community-wide activities.

+ Best of Big & Small

At TNC, you’ll find the excellence and quality of service you’d expect at a larger church, including teaching, decor, events and music. However, this is combined with a smaller sized congregation that provides an environment of intimacy, inclusion, access and easy decision-making not readily available in a larger congregation. We’re the best of both worlds!
